VO2 Max and Resting Metabolic Rate

This leading edge technology delivers simple and accurate fitness testing based on oxygen consumption. This data can be used as the foundation for customized exercise programs that truly meet the needs of the individual. The VO2 Max Test is a measurement that reflects a person’s ability to perform sustained exercise. It is generally considered the best indicator of cardiovascular fitness and aerobic endurance along with being one of the single-best variables to determine overall longevity.

Using the VO2 Max offers anybody who is looking to become more fit benefits that were once available only to elite athletes:

  • The VO2 Max has mixing chamber technology. This complicated and expensive system was once only accessible to high-performance athletes. VO2 Max, or peak oxygen uptake, is a measure of how much oxygen your body can use during exercise. It’s considered the gold standard for measuring cardiovascular fitness.
  • The advanced and innovative equipment measures Anaerobic Threshold and VO2 Max results to define workouts zones unique to each client.
  • Most importantly, it is ACCURATE. Independent studies have validated the results which you can view here.

When performing the VO2 test, you will wear a mask as shown to ensure your breath enters the machine for analysis.

You also will wear a heart rate monitor to help monitor exercise intensity and develop exercise intensity zones specific to you. The electrode gel shown will allow the monitor to be more comfortable and accurate during the test.

The VO2 test will take anywhere from 6-20 minutes depending on your fitness level and is entirely based on your perceived effort. Once you feel you cannot continue exercising further, your test will end, a brief cooldown period will ensue, and Dr. Zehnder will discuss your customized report with you.

In addition to assessing VO2 Max, the equipment assesses Resting Metabolic Rate, or RMR. Metabolic Rate is, quite basically, the rate at which your body converts food into energy.

Knowing your RMR is essential to:

  • Give a baseline of your “normal” metabolism.
  • Stabilize weight loss. Once you create a long-term change to your RMR, weight is more likely to stabilize.
  • Pinpoint caloric weight loss zone. Knowing your RMR can help your PT create a specific weight loss plan based on your needs.

The RMR test is extremely simple and only requires you to lie semi-recumbent (as shown) for approximately 10 minutes while breathing into the mouthpiece. During this process, your breath chemistry – oxygen and carbon dioxide – and respiratory rate will be assessed to determine your resting metabolic rate.

Your personalized plans will be provided to you to help you with:

  • REAL TIME FEEDBACK: You will have real-time visuals of heart rate zones, minutes spent aerobic versus minutes anaerobic, and the actual number of calories burned during a workout and post-workout (EPOC). You can even gain insight into how you use carbohydrates and fats proportionally during exercise.
  • EASILY CUSTOMIZED WORKOUT PLANS: You will be provided with professionally designed workouts for Weight-loss, Endurance, and Cardio-Strengthening. If you desire to create a custom workout, Rock Solid will help you develop this!
